Muskego, Wisconsin -April 30, 2009 --Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Network C.A.R.E.S., Inc. is working relentlessly to obtain $75,000.00 for the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Mouse Model, critical in the fight against EDS. May - Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month - is the nation-wide fundraising kickoff to provide Johns Hopkins the proper tools for finding better treatments for EDS.
The development of this particular mouse model will enable researchers to explore treatment options using an already FDA-approved medication to reduce the fragility of the vascular system. Additionally, this study will allow researchers to better understand the genetic mechanism involved in not only the vascular type of EDS, but potentially all types of EDS and other connective tissue disorders in which collagen proteins are affected. This project will be a continuation of Dr. Hal Dietz’s Altered Cytokine Signaling in Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (vEDS) study.
EDS is caused by genetic defects in collagen, which is a protein that normally gives strength and elasticity to the skin, muscles, joint capsules, ligaments, blood vessels, and internal organs. Weak and stretchy collagen results in fragile skin, unstable and painful joints, and rupture of blood vessels and organs.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Network C.A.R.E.S., Inc. is a non-profit all volunteer organization, established and driven by EDS patients and family members. The proceeds of all donations are used to directly fund a vEDS treatment Mouse Model for study at Johns Hopkins. Our mission is to help improve the quality of life for people who have EDS through research, education, and support.
